Wastewater comprises domestic and industrial wastes, rain water and surface water run-off. It is therefore unhygienic and dirty; containing dissolved and suspended particles of sewage and surface matter. It is therefore crucial for a wastewater treatment process to be undertaken before consumption.

The procedure is as follows:

-The suspended material has to be done away with first. The bigger ones like paper, bottles and plastics go first, then the lesser ones such as silt.

-Using the concept of gravity, the wastewater is then passed through a sedimentation tank where solid organic matter is filtered.

-It is then passed to aeration basins to facilitate the development of microorganisms responsible for destroying contaminants and other organic pollutants.

- It is then taken to clarifier basins to allow for the sedimentation of the sludge. Some of it( the sludge) is squeezed to expel the excess water it hold while the remaining is reused.

-The final process of wastewater treatment is to kill the harmful bacteria which can cause illness to human life. This is done by injecting sodium hypochlorite.
